THE FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE SECOND AFRICAN-NORDIC CONFERENCE IN MATHEMATICS

The Mathematics for Sustainable Development (MATH4SDG) project, funded by NORAD under the NORHED II programme, is organising the 2nd African-Nordic Conference in Mathematics. The conference is being organized through the three MATH4SDG partner institutions at the University of Dar es Salaam (the host), Makerere University (Uganda) and University of Bergen (Norway), in collaboration with Sida,CoREMATH and others.

The goal of the conference is to bring together researchers in mathematics and mathematics education to share knowledge, skills, current developments in the fields and promote research collaboration among researchers from Eastern Africa region, the rest of Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia and America.

Presentations at the conference will cover a broad range of topics in mathematics and mathematics education including, but not limited to,

Abstracts must be prepared in LaTeX using the templates provided on the conference website. Submissions should be sent via the online submission portal, to be created from 1st September 2025. The deadline for abstract submissions is 15th February 2026.

The 2nd African-Nordic conference organisers are working with the editor of the Tanzania Journal of Science (TJS) to publish selected, peer-reviewed papers from the conference, as part of a dedicated Special issue of the journal. Authors are invited to submit full paper to LoC by 31st October 2026, for expert review. Detailed information on TJS can be found at http://journals. udsm.ac.tz/index.php/tjs. More information on the special issue will be updated on the conference website.

English will be the official language of the conference.

The Conference audience will be mathematicians from the Eastern Africa region, the rest of Africa, Europe and the rest of the world. It is anticipated that the total number of conference participants will be about 150.

More confirmations expected

The registration fee is USD 250 for senior/non-student participants and USD 150 for students. The fee covers tea/ coffee during breaks, lunches, the conference dinner, conference materials and airport transfer.

Limited financial assistance to cater for (full/partial) travels and/or local expenses will be provided to some participants depending on the availability of sponsors. Those seeking for support should send their applications through the Secretary for selection by LoC. Successful applicants will be informed at least one month before the start of the conference. Participants are, however, encouraged to make efforts to secure support.

Participants are advised to seek for visa details and other requirements from their respective local Embassies. Invitation letters will be provided on request to those participants requiring visa to enter Tanzania. Requests should be directed to the Secretary of the Local Organising Committee.

Arusha city offers a variety of accommodation options, and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) has negotiated special discounted Bed and breakfast rates with the following hotels:

  3. SG Resort – $115
  4. Lush Gardens – $ 90

Participants may arrange bookings through the Secretary of the LOC or contact the hotels directly. When booking the listed hotels directly, participants should reference the conference name and dates to benefit from the discounted rates.

The Local Organizing Committee is planning an optional excursion to some of Tanzania’s top attractions, including the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, Tarangire National Park, and the Ngorongoro Crater. Arusha, the host city, is a culturally vibrant hub located at the base of Mount Meru and near Africa’s highest peak, Mt. Kilimanjaro. Known as Tanzania’s safari capital, Arusha also offers access to iconic destinations like Serengeti National Park, Lake Manyara, and Olduvai Gorge. Details and updates about the excursion will be communicated through the conference website.
