THE SECOND AFRICAN-NORDIC CONFERENCE IN MATHEMATICS

Math4SDG

The Mathematics for Sustainable Development (MATH4SDG) Project is a project funded by Norad, under Norwegian Programme for Capacity Development in Higher Education and Research for Development (NORHED II) Programme through the agreement number QZA-21/0162. The programme is for a period of six years, from 1 January 2021 to 31 December 2026. The overall programme is implemented by three Partner Institutions; the University of Bergen (UiB) in Norway as the leading Institution (north partner), the University of Dar es Salaam though its Mathematics Department and the Makerere University in Uganda (termed as the Southern partners).

Overall Aim
To increase the mathematical literacy in Tanzania and Uganda.

Project Objectives
The goals of MATH4SDG project goals are (i) better research in Mathematics and Mathematics education; (ii) updated and relevant programmes in mathematics and mathematics education; (iii) higher visibility of the departments and closer links with industries and society. The main components of the project are PhD training of six students, research support, and support of outreach activities and gender activities.

Expected Outcomes of the Project
  1. Better mathematical research at the Department;
  2. Updated and relevant program in mathematics and mathematics education at the departments;
  3. Higher visibility of the department and closer contact to industry and the society

Main Project Achievements

PhD curricula

In both university of Dar es salaam and Makerere, the PhD curricula were reviewed to align with the project focus areas.



PhD students

All 11 PhD students are progressing well, with several publications in international peer-reviewed journals.



Outreach activities

Several outreach activities supporting the improvement of the teaching of mathematics in pre-university colleges/schools have been carried out in various regions in both Tanzania and Uganda

Collaboration

Collaboration with the industry/society has been done through workshops and academia-industrial visits.
